Typically, the surface roughness for flat – face flanges should be around the same 125 to 250 µin Ra as raised – face flanges. This ensures that the gasket can make a good contact and create a reliable seal.

Ring – type joint flanges are a bit different. These are used in high – pressure applications, and the ring – type gasket they use is designed to fit into a groove. The surface roughness requirements for the groove where the ring – type gasket sits are usually a bit more strict. The ASME standard often calls for a surface roughness of around 50 to 125 µin Ra. This smoother surface helps the ring – type gasket form a tight, metal – to – metal seal, which is essential for high – pressure situations.
